5 Things to Know When Starting a Business

Starting a new business venture can be a very intimidating prospect but when you have that thunderbolt idea that no one else is capitalizing on, you really want to power through to ensure you get there before anyone else. Relax, take a read through our list and see if our tips for setting up a new enterprise can help.

Business Finance

It’s all very well and good if you have a rich partner or some inheritance money to fund your endeavor, but not everyone is as lucky has that. Self-financing is something you’ll have to think about if you want your startup to succeed past the early days. There are a number of ways to get access to a lump sum of fast cash. One way is to review a guide that helps you choose the right life settlement companies, as selling old life insurance policies is a great way of unlocking quick capital. Or perhaps you would be eligible for some government support? Find out if there are any grants available that you could access.

Market Research

Everyone thinks that they have the worlds’ best idea for a new product but without research telling you that there is a gap in the market for that idea, you don’t know if it’s commercially viable. Want to start an LGBTQ+ RNB club night? Great – how many people in your local community have told you they would attend one? Without research you can’t project the viability of a project so make sure you do your research first and take action second.

Business Plan

Failing to plan is planning to fail or so the old saying goes, and in business this could not be more accurate. Make sure you know what your aims and goals are by using SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely) objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs) as part of your reporting methodology for when it comes to evaluate what you have done. Sounds like an excuse but there are a number of resources out there if you are struggling.

Location

The world is opening up again and new businesses are going to start cropping up where old ones failed over the course of the pandemic. Now is probably the best time to recognize this and open up your own space. Did that independent shop you loved to buy goodies from go under due to COVID? Mourn the loss by seeing if you can make it to their closing down sale. And, as long as it was due to the pandemic and the location of the physical location was great, then by all means ask for the information of the people who own the building – they would probably prefer to see a friendly face take the space over than a big-name corporate brand.

Registration Documents

Make sure you know your way around the business registration process by keeping an eye on your governmental website for business registration. If you happen to live in the same city, delivering the documents in person and being friendly with the receptionist is a great way to make sure that the process is as easy as possible and that you have a friendly connection should the process go south.
